What should you know about stress and itching?

Short answer
Stress can amplify itching and scratching, but persistent itchy skin still deserves assessment for an underlying skin or medical cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How stress and itch interact
Stress can heighten attention to skin sensations and make an existing itch feel stronger. Scratching may briefly distract from the sensation, then damage the skin barrier and prolong irritation. Itch may also arise from asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, skin yeast infection, lichen planus, psoriasis, scabies, or hives. The timing of flares can provide a clue, but stress does not prove that stress is the only cause.
Ways to interrupt the cycle
Use a plain moisturiser regularly, keep showers lukewarm, and choose loose breathable clothing. Keep fingernails short and try a cool compress instead of scratching. Notice whether flares follow heat, sweating, a new product, poor sleep, or a stressful event. Slow breathing, a short walk, and a consistent bedtime may lower arousal, but they should complement skin care rather than replace an examination when itch continues.
When to arrange care
Book medical advice if itching persists, disturbs sleep, causes open sores, or affects much of the body without an obvious rash. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, fever with a rapidly worsening rash, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus, or pain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits eczema, hives, infection, or another condition; which products to use; and whether medicines, blood tests, or a referral could clarify unexplained itch.

Questions people ask
Can stress cause itching without a visible rash?
Yes, stress can heighten itch sensations, but persistent itch without a rash may have other causes and should be assessed.
Does scratching make stress-related itching worse?
It can. Scratching may injure the barrier and keep the itch-scratch cycle going.
