What should you know about streptococcus rash symptoms?

Some streptococcal illnesses produce a fine, rough-feeling rash that may begin on the trunk and spread, often alongside sore throat or fever. Skin infection can instead cause a localized area that is hot, painful, swollen, or sharply bordered. Many other conditions also cause rashes, including atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, drug rash, heat rash, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm, and scabies. A rash does not by itself establish which condition is present.

Note when the rash began, where it started, whether it itches or hurts, and any recent sore throat, fever, new medicine, product, travel, or contact with someone ill. Arrange a clinical assessment if the rash is new and spreading or occurs with fever. A clinician may inspect the throat and skin and decide whether testing or prescription treatment is appropriate. Keep the skin cool, use gentle fragrance-free products, and avoid scratching.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion, a rapidly spreading painful rash, skin peeling, purple spots that do not fade with pressure, or a very unwell child. These features need prompt evaluation regardless of the suspected cause.

Ask what pattern the rash follows, whether a throat or skin test is needed, whether any medicine could be responsible, and which symptoms should trigger reassessment.
