What should you know about streptococcus food poisoning?

Short answer
Food poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and fever. The exact germ is not always known from symptoms alone, and streptococcal food poisoning is not something to confirm without clinical assessment. Most uncomplicated cases are managed with careful hydration and rest, while severe illness may need urgent treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Blood, severe pain, confusion or inability to drink
How foodborne illness behaves
Symptoms can begin after eating contaminated food and may affect more than one person who shared the meal. Repeated vomiting and diarrhoea remove water and salts from the body, causing thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, weakness or reduced urine. Abdominal pain and fever can occur with many infections, so their presence does not identify streptococcal contamination by itself.
Replacing lost fluids
Take frequent small sips of water or oral rehydration solution. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with small amounts rather than drinking a large volume at once. Continue light foods as tolerated and avoid alcohol. Oral rehydration therapy is useful because it replaces water and salts; IV fluid therapy may be needed when dehydration is severe or fluids cannot stay down. Wash hands and avoid preparing food for others while ill.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent medical help for blood in vomit or stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of severe dehydration. Seek prompt advice for persistent fever, symptoms in an infant or older adult, pregnancy, or a weakened immune system. Contact a clinician if several people became ill after the same meal so possible public-health advice can be considered.
Questions to ask
How can I tell whether I am becoming dehydrated? Should I use oral rehydration solution? Do I need a stool test or assessment for infection? Which medicines should I avoid while vomiting or having diarrhoea?

Questions people ask
Can symptoms prove that streptococcus caused food poisoning?
No. Symptoms overlap between foodborne illnesses, so the cause may need clinical assessment and testing.
When are IV fluids considered?
They may be needed when dehydration is severe or a person cannot keep oral fluids down.
