Strep throat without antibiotics: what to know

A sore throat can come from a virus, irritation or bacterial strep. Strep throat is a bacterial infection, but symptoms such as sore throat, fever and swollen glands do not prove the cause by themselves. A clinician may examine your throat and use a swab when appropriate. If strep is confirmed, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of antibiotic treatment rather than stopping, sharing or saving a prescription. If a viral illness is more likely, antibiotics will not help that infection.

Take frequent sips of water, use warm or cool drinks according to comfort, and choose foods that are easy to swallow. Rest and avoid smoking or other throat irritants. Use pain or fever medicine only as directed on its label and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, treating a child, or managing another condition. Arrange a GP consultation if the diagnosis has not been checked or symptoms are not improving.

Get prompt medical advice if pain is worsening, fever persists, or swollen glands are becoming more noticeable. Seek urgent care if you struggle to breathe or swallow saliva, develop a muffled voice, cannot drink enough, or have swelling that makes it difficult to open your mouth. A rapidly worsening illness needs assessment even if antibiotics were previously declined.
