Strep throat with COVID: what to know

Strep throat is caused by certain bacteria, while COVID is caused by a virus. A person can have one infection, the other, or both at the same time. Sore throat, fever and swollen glands may occur with strep; COVID may also bring cough, tiredness, congestion or changes in taste and smell. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. A throat swab can help assess for strep, while a COVID test may be appropriate when viral symptoms or an exposure are present.

Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Follow the instructions for any COVID test and reduce close contact while you are unwell. Do not use leftover antibiotics: they do not treat a viral infection, and a clinician should decide whether confirmed strep needs antibiotic treatment. Arrange medical advice if a severe sore throat is not settling, you cannot maintain fluids, or symptoms are worsening. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, marked swelling in the mouth or throat, new confusion, or unusual drowsiness. Fever with a rapidly deteriorating condition also warrants prompt assessment.
