Strep throat test time: when results are available

A clinician first reviews your symptoms and examines your throat, tonsils, and neck glands. The swab itself takes moments, although the appointment may take longer if other causes need consideration. Some tests provide an answer during the visit; other samples are sent for processing, so the clinic may contact you later. Ask exactly when and how you will receive the result. A result is interpreted alongside symptoms, because a sore throat may come from a virus, tonsillitis, or another cause.

Drink fluids often, rest, and choose foods that are comfortable to swallow. Keep track of fever, throat pain, swallowing, and any change in breathing. Follow the clinic’s instructions about medicines and contact details so a result can reach you. Do not begin leftover antibiotics while waiting. If bacteria are confirmed, the clinician can discuss antibiotic treatment and explain how to take it.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling, severe one-sided throat pain, or a muffled voice. Contact the clinic if the expected result has not arrived, especially if you are getting worse. A pending test does not replace assessment of new or severe symptoms.

Ask which test is being used, when you should expect the result, how it will be communicated, and what to do if you miss the call. Also ask what symptom changes require urgent review and whether you should avoid close contact while unwell.
