Strep throat and a sore neck

Strep throat commonly causes pain when swallowing and can make the glands along the sides of the neck tender or swollen. Muscle aching may accompany fever and feeling unwell. Pain that is severe on one side, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, or swelling that changes the shape of the neck can point to a complication rather than simple gland tenderness. A sore neck has many possible causes, so it should be interpreted with the throat symptoms.

Drink little and often, rest, and try soft foods. A warm or cool drink may soothe the throat; choose whichever feels better. A warm compress over tender muscles can be comforting, but do not press firmly on swollen glands. Follow package directions for suitable pain relief and check with a pharmacist if you have stomach, kidney, liver, or pregnancy concerns. Arrange a GP consultation if the sore throat and neck tenderness are worsening or making drinking difficult.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck swelling, severe one-sided throat pain, or a stiff neck with confusion or marked illness. A persistent fever, worsening weakness, or signs of dehydration also needs prompt review. Do not wait for home care to work when swallowing liquids is becoming unsafe.

Ask whether the neck pain is from swollen glands, throat inflammation, or another cause; whether testing is appropriate; and which pain relief fits your health history. Tell the clinician whether the pain is on one side, whether you can open your mouth normally, and how much you are drinking.
