Strep throat self care: what can help

Short answer
Strep throat self care can ease discomfort, but suspected infection needs clinical assessment because antibiotics may be appropriate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What strep throat means
Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by streptococcal bacteria. A sore throat, fever, painful swallowing, and tender or swollen glands in the neck can occur. Cough and a runny nose are less typical, so the overall pattern matters. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether a swab or other test is useful.
Comfort measures at home
Rest, sip cool or warm fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe an irritated throat for adults and older children who can gargle safely. Use paracetamol or ibuprofen only if suitable for you and follow the product instructions; never give aspirin to children. Wash hands, avoid sharing cups or cutlery, and cover coughs and sneezes. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription.
When to seek care
Arrange a GP consultation when a severe sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, or painful swallowing suggests strep throat, especially when symptoms are not settling. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, marked dehydration, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling. A new rash with fever also deserves prompt assessment.
Useful questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit strep throat or tonsillitis, whether testing is needed, which pain relief is suitable, and whether antibiotic treatment would help. Mention allergies, pregnancy, regular medicines, and any difficulty drinking.
