Strep throat only on one side: what to know

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat that may inflame the tonsils and nearby tissues. Pain can be uneven when inflammation is more noticeable around one tonsil. A viral sore throat, tonsillitis, a local mouth problem, or an abscess can also produce one-sided discomfort.

A clinician will consider fever, cough, swallowing difficulty, voice changes, neck glands, and the appearance of the throat. A swab or rapid test may be used when the examination suggests strep throat. The symptom pattern cannot determine the diagnosis by itself.

Sip water or another suitable drink, rest, and choose foods that are easy to swallow. Follow label directions for any over-the-counter pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you have a long-term condition, take regular medicines, or are treating a child.

Book a GP Consultation when pain is severe, does not settle, or comes with fever, swollen glands, or difficulty swallowing. Avoid sharing drinks and do not start antibiotics without medical advice.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, inability to open the mouth normally, or quickly worsening swelling. These signs can indicate a complication requiring prompt examination.
