What happens when strep throat is not treated?

A throat infection thought to be strep may sometimes improve as the immune system clears it, but not every sore throat is strep and not every infection follows the same course. Ongoing inflammation can make swallowing painful and can contribute to dehydration. In some people, infection can extend around the tonsil or affect other parts of the body. A sore throat, fever, swollen glands, and tonsil coating are clues rather than a diagnosis. A GP can decide whether examination or testing is needed and whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate.

Arrange medical advice if strep throat is suspected, particularly when symptoms are strong, persistent, or recurring. Until reviewed, sip fluids often, rest, select soft foods, and use suitable pain relief according to the label. Wash hands and avoid sharing drinks or utensils. Do not use leftover antibiotics, stop a prescribed course early, or give medicine intended for another person. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, immune problems, and medicines you already take.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, drooling, inability to swallow saliva or liquids, a muffled voice, or rapidly worsening throat or neck swelling. Get prompt review for severe one-sided pain, difficulty opening the mouth, dehydration, a spreading rash, or unusual drowsiness. If the throat is not starting to improve or symptoms return after easing, arrange another assessment rather than continuing to wait.
