What happens when strep throat is left untreated?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that can cause a painful sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands and inflamed tonsils. Without appropriate care, symptoms may last or worsen, and the infection can spread to nearby tissues or to other people. Less commonly, the body’s immune response after infection can affect areas such as the kidneys or joints. A sore throat can also be viral, so diagnosis should come from an examination and, when appropriate, testing rather than guesswork.

Arrange a GP Consultation if strep throat is suspected, especially when sore throat begins suddenly with fever and there is little cough or runny nose. Until assessed, wash hands, avoid sharing utensils and stay home from close contact when you feel unwell. Drink fluids and use suitable comfort measures. If a clinician prescribes Antibiotic Treatment, take it exactly as directed and do not save doses for later. Contact the clinic if symptoms fail to improve or medicine causes a concerning reaction.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion, or rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck. One-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice or inability to open the mouth normally can signal a complication. A persistent or high fever, worsening pain, or a new rash also warrants prompt review.
