Strep throat: what does “français” refer to?

French medical information may use “angine streptococcique” or “pharyngite à streptocoque” for strep throat. The illness can involve a sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, red or swollen tonsils, and tender glands in the neck. These symptoms can also occur with viral infections, so a phrase translated from another source does not establish a diagnosis.

If you are switching between languages during a consultation, show the clinician the original wording and explain when symptoms began. Mention any allergy, medicines, rash, cough, or breathing and swallowing problem so the assessment is not based on translation alone.

Arrange a GP consultation if strep throat is suspected, symptoms are significant, or communication about your diagnosis or prescription is unclear. Ask for the diagnosis, medicine instructions, and warning signs in a language you understand. Drink fluids, rest, and avoid sharing utensils while you have a sore throat. Do not use an untranslated prescription or another person’s antibiotics.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow liquids or saliva, drooling, severe weakness, confusion, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, or signs of dehydration. A widespread or blistering rash, facial swelling, or wheezing after medicine also needs immediate assessment.

Ask what the diagnosis is in both languages if helpful, whether testing is needed, how each medicine should be taken, and when you should return if symptoms do not improve.
