Can strep throat cause impetigo?

Impetigo is a contagious infection of the skin. It often begins where skin is scratched, irritated, or broken, and may produce small sores that ooze and develop a honey-coloured crust. Strep bacteria can be involved in impetigo, just as related bacteria can infect the throat, but the two conditions are separate infections. A child or adult may have one without the other. A throat symptom alongside a crusted sore therefore needs assessment of both sites rather than an assumption about the cause.

Keep affected skin clean and covered with a light dressing if possible, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, or bedding. Do not pick the crusts. Arrange a GP consultation for spreading sores, facial involvement, or a sore throat occurring at the same time. The clinician may recommend a suitable antibiotic treatment for the throat, skin, or both, depending on the examination.

Get prompt medical help if redness spreads quickly, pain or swelling becomes marked, fever continues, or the person seems significantly unwell. Seek urgent care for breathing or swallowing difficulty, swelling around the eye, confusion, or signs of severe dehydration. A rapidly changing skin infection can require treatment without delay.

Ask whether the skin changes look like impetigo, whether the throat needs testing, and how long the person should avoid close contact. Confirm how to apply or take any treatment, how to clean shared items, and which skin changes require review.
