What should you know about strep rash on back?

A rash associated with streptococcal throat infection may feel rough and can spread beyond its starting area. Fever, sore throat, painful swallowing, headache, or tender neck glands make a related throat illness more relevant. A rash limited to the back can also result from sweat and friction, a new detergent, follicle irritation, eczema, or a medicine reaction. The back is difficult to inspect, so ask someone to photograph the area in good light and note whether it blanches, feels raised, or has blisters. A clinician may examine both the skin and throat.

Seek clinical advice when a sudden back rash accompanies fever or throat pain. Keep the area cool and dry, wear loose breathable clothing, and avoid fragranced lotions or vigorous scrubbing. Do not apply leftover antibiotics or strong steroid products without advice. Wash hands regularly and avoid sharing towels while an infectious illness is possible. Record recent medicines, products, exercise, heat exposure, and the order in which symptoms appeared. Heat Rash, Contact Dermatitis, and Drug Rash may resemble parts of this pattern but are managed differently.

Get urgent help if the rash spreads quickly, becomes purple or bruise-like, blisters, peels, or is accompanied by severe skin pain. Breathing trouble, swallowing difficulty, facial swelling, confusion, faintness, or inability to drink also needs urgent attention.
