Can you have strep without a sore throat?

Strep throat commonly causes throat pain, fever, tender neck glands, or inflamed tonsils, but not every person notices every symptom. Children may show reduced appetite, nausea, headache, or irritability. A skin infection caused by streptococcal bacteria can instead cause redness, warmth, swelling, or pain in one area.

No sore throat does not confirm or exclude strep. A [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) or [Influenza](/conditions/influenza/) may cause fever and fatigue, while [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) or [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/) can irritate the throat without a bacterial infection.

Record the symptoms, their start, any fever, recent exposure to someone with confirmed strep, and medicines already taken. Arrange a GP assessment if symptoms are significant, persistent, or unusual for you. A throat examination and testing may be considered when the findings support it; antibiotics are not useful for viral illnesses.

Rest, drink fluids, and use only symptom medicines suitable for your age, pregnancy status, allergies, and other conditions. Do not use another person’s antibiotics or save tablets for a future illness.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion, a rapidly spreading rash, or marked swelling of the face or neck. Prompt review is also needed for a painful, hot, swollen skin area or a child who is unusually sleepy and difficult to rouse.
