What to know about stopping early puberty

Early puberty may involve breast development, pubic or underarm hair, body odour, acne, a growth spurt, or vaginal bleeding earlier than expected. Some changes come from temporary adrenal or ovarian hormone activity, while others reflect activation of the brain–pituitary–gonad system. The clinician will consider the child’s age, sequence of changes, growth pattern, family history, medicines, and general health.

Arrange review with a paediatrician or paediatric endocrinologist. Bring a timeline of physical changes and growth records if available. Assessment may include examination, bone-age imaging, and blood tests such as a female hormone blood panel. If puberty is progressing centrally, medicines that pause the relevant hormone signals may be discussed. The plan depends on the cause, pace, growth, emotional wellbeing, and the child’s needs.
