How to stop shin splints

Short answer
To settle shin splints, reduce impact temporarily, use comfortable cold therapy, maintain gentle mobility, and rebuild activity gradually with attention to footwear and running technique.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Training change
- Reduce painful impact and use comfortable low-impact exercise while symptoms settle.
- Return to running
- Restart with easy sessions and progress only when symptoms stay calm during and afterward.
Why shin splints develop
Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome, are exercise-related pain and tenderness along the inner border of the shin. They can appear after increasing running, jumping, hills, or training on a harder surface faster than the legs can adapt. Flat Feet may alter how load passes through the foot and lower leg. Shin pain that is pinpoint, present at rest, worsening despite reduced activity, or associated with swelling needs a different assessment because a bone stress injury can resemble an overuse problem.
How to modify training
Replace painful impact with a low-impact activity that remains comfortable, and avoid pushing through sharp or steadily worsening pain. Use a wrapped cold pack after activity if it helps. Check whether shoes are worn, unsupportive, or poorly matched to your training; a clinician can advise whether Custom Orthotics are appropriate. A physiotherapist can assess calf strength, hip control, and running form. Gait Retraining may help reduce repeated loading. Return to running with short, easy sessions and increase only when symptoms remain settled during and after activity.
When shin pain needs review
Seek prompt assessment for pain in one precise spot, pain that occurs at rest or at night, visible swelling, numbness, weakness, or difficulty walking. Arrange a review if symptoms keep returning, interfere with ordinary walking, or do not improve after reducing impact. A clinician may need to distinguish shin splints from other bone, muscle, or nerve problems.
Questions worth asking
Ask whether your pain pattern fits shin splints, how to adjust training, and whether your foot mechanics or shoes contribute. Ask when to resume impact exercise and whether Physiotherapy, Gait Retraining, or other support would be useful.

Questions people ask
Can you run with shin splints?
Running through increasing pain can prolong irritation. Switch to comfortable low-impact exercise and return gradually after symptoms settle.
Do shoe inserts help shin splints?
They may help some people when foot mechanics contribute, but suitability should be assessed rather than assumed.
