What to do for a runny nose right away

A sudden watery nose can follow cold air, strong smells or an allergy. Repeated sneezing and itchy eyes are common with Allergic Rhinitis; dust and pets can be relevant triggers. Congestion, sore throat, cough or fever may accompany a Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19. Pressure around the cheeks or forehead can occur with Sinusitis. The symptom does not by itself prove any one condition.

Use saline drops or a rinse prepared with safe water, wait briefly, and blow one nostril at a time. Place tissues nearby and protect sore skin with a bland moisturiser. Step away from smoke, perfume, dust and other known triggers. If allergy symptoms are familiar, a pharmacist can advise about an antihistamine; check before use if you are pregnant, have another condition or take regular medicines. Rest and drink fluids when infection is possible.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, wheezing with swelling, blue lips, faintness or rapidly worsening facial or throat swelling. Seek prompt medical advice for severe headache or facial pain, confusion, dehydration, a persistent high fever, unexplained repeated bleeding, or watery discharge after a head injury. Arrange review when symptoms continue or keep returning without an obvious trigger.
