How to settle a runny nose

Thin, clear discharge often accompanies Allergic Rhinitis or exposure to smoke, perfume, dust or cold air. A Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 can also cause nasal discharge, usually with other respiratory symptoms. Facial pressure, blocked drainage and worsening discomfort can occur with Sinusitis. A runny nose by itself does not identify which condition is present.

Blow your nose gently, one side at a time, and use saline drops or a saline rinse made with safe water. Drink regularly and use a humidified room if dry air irritates you. Wash hands and avoid sharing towels when infection is possible. If symptoms follow dust or animals, reducing exposure may help; House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy are examples of triggers. A pharmacist can check whether an antihistamine or nasal medicine suits you.

Get medical advice for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, severe facial pain, confusion, dehydration, or a high fever with marked illness. Arrange review if discharge is bloody without a clear reason, follows a head injury, or continues without improvement. Consider infection precautions and testing when a runny nose comes with fever, cough, sore throat or a known exposure.

Ask what pattern points toward allergy, infection or sinus inflammation, whether your medicines could contribute, and which nasal treatment is appropriate for your age, pregnancy status and other conditions.
