How to stop knee swelling

Short answer
To settle knee swelling, reduce aggravating activity, elevate the leg, use a wrapped cold pack, and arrange medical assessment when pain, heat, injury, or loss of function is present.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Reduce the activity that provokes swelling and support the leg while resting.
- Cold pack
- Wrap it in cloth and use it briefly rather than directly on skin.
What a swollen knee may indicate
Knee swelling is fluid in or around the joint. A sudden swelling after a twisting injury can occur with an ACL Tear or Meniscus Tear. Knee Bursitis may cause a more localised, tender area, while Knee Osteoarthritis can cause swelling and stiffness after use. Gout often presents with sudden intense pain, heat, redness, and swelling. A Baker's Cyst may feel like fullness behind the knee. The symptom does not establish one diagnosis, so onset, injury, warmth, and movement are useful details.
Measures that may help
Stop or modify running, squatting, kneeling, and other actions that increase the swelling. Rest with the leg supported and elevate it when sitting. Apply a cold pack wrapped in fabric for short intervals; protect the skin and do not sleep with it in place. Gentle range-of-motion movements can reduce stiffness if they are comfortable. Avoid forcing the knee or repeatedly testing it. If fluid remains, a clinician may examine the joint and discuss medication, imaging, or Joint Aspiration when appropriate.
When assessment is urgent
Seek urgent care after a major injury, a deformed knee, inability to stand, or a knee that suddenly becomes very swollen. Get prompt help for a hot, red joint with fever, severe pain, or feeling acutely unwell. New calf swelling with chest pain or breathlessness is an emergency. Arrange a review for recurrent swelling, locking, giving way, or symptoms that are not improving.
What to ask
Ask what structure may be irritated, whether you need imaging or fluid testing, and how much weight-bearing is appropriate. Ask when to restart exercise and which strengthening work can protect the knee.

Questions people ask
Can you exercise with a swollen knee?
Choose gentle movement only if it does not increase pain or swelling. Pause impact exercise until the cause is clearer.
What does fluid on the knee mean?
It means extra fluid is present in or around the joint; injury, inflammation, arthritis, or other causes may be responsible.
