How to manage cradle cap

Cradle cap is infantile seborrheic dermatitis, which commonly causes greasy or dry yellow-white scales on the scalp. Mild cases may also affect the eyebrows, behind the ears, or skin folds. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is usually not painful, although irritated skin can become uncomfortable. A similar-looking rash may need another diagnosis if it is very red, weeping, swollen, or spreading.

Massage a small amount of a clinician-approved emollient into the scales, leave it briefly to soften them, then loosen only what comes away easily with a soft brush. Wash with a mild baby shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Keep oils and creams away from the eyes, and stop if the scalp becomes more irritated. Do not use medicated products on an infant without suitable guidance.

Contact your baby's clinician if the rash spreads beyond the scalp, the skin cracks or bleeds, fluid or pus appears, or the baby seems unwell. Prompt review is appropriate for fever, marked swelling, significant tenderness, or a rapidly worsening rash. Ask for help when home care has not improved the scalp or when you are unsure whether the flakes are cradle cap.
