Stomach fat transfer: what to know

A surgeon removes fat from the abdominal area with liposuction, prepares it, and injects it into a chosen recipient site. This can address hollowing or shape differences, but the procedure is not a way to lose weight. Available donor fat, skin elasticity, medical history and the intended recipient area all affect planning. The body may absorb some of the transferred fat, and the result can change as swelling settles. Risks include infection, bleeding, uneven contours, fat cysts, anaesthetic complications and injury to nearby structures.

Use a qualified surgeon and an accredited setting. During consultation, explain the change you want and disclose medicines, allergies, smoking, previous surgery, bleeding problems and pregnancy plans. Ask where fat will be taken, where it will be placed, whether another session could be discussed, and how long activity restrictions may last. Arrange transport and practical support, follow wound and compression instructions, and keep every follow-up appointment. Alternatives may include dermal fillers or another procedure, depending on the area and the amount of correction needed.

Call the surgical team for worsening pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, wound separation or swelling that is suddenly increasing. Emergency symptoms include breathlessness, chest pain, collapse, confusion or a fast new heartbeat. Seek prompt review for severe skin colour change, blistering or a painful firm area. Do not massage or exercise the treated area unless your care team has given that instruction.

Ask what result is realistic for the chosen area, how donor fat is processed, how recovery will be protected, and which symptoms should trigger same-day or emergency care.
