Stomach compression garment: what to know

A garment may support swollen or healing tissues, reduce a sense of heaviness and help some people move more comfortably. It does not treat a tumour, replace wound care or remove the cause of abdominal swelling. The right design depends on where swelling is located, skin condition, recent surgery and circulation.

Compression should feel supportive rather than sharply painful, numb or restrictive. A garment that rolls, bunches or leaves deep marks may put uneven pressure on the skin. Lymphoedema Therapy can help determine whether compression is suitable and how it fits within a wider plan.

Use the size and wearing schedule recommended by a clinician or trained fitter. Put it on smoothly, without folds, and check breathing, comfort and skin colour. Remove it for skin inspection and washing according to the instructions. Keep the garment clean and replace it when its elasticity or shape changes.

Tell your care team about open wounds, infection, reduced sensation, severe pain, circulation problems or recent abdominal surgery before using compression. A clinician may choose a different garment, padding or treatment approach. Do not tighten the garment to make it work faster.

Remove the garment and seek clinical advice for increasing pain, numbness, tingling, skin colour change, new swelling above or below the garment, breathing difficulty, dizziness or a rash that persists. Seek urgent help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, fainting or rapidly worsening swelling.

Ask what problem the garment is intended to address, how much pressure is appropriate, when to wear it, how to check your skin and how often it should be refitted. Ask whether you need supervised Lymphoedema Therapy and which symptoms mean you should remove it.
