Stim TENS unit: what to know

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The device delivers pulses through adhesive electrodes placed on intact skin near, around, or sometimes beside a painful area. People commonly feel tingling or tapping; the setting should remain comfortable rather than painful. Relief may vary and can be temporary. TENS can support a broader plan that may include movement, rehabilitation, sleep, and treatment of the underlying problem.

Read the device instructions and begin with clean, dry skin and a low intensity. Place electrodes only where the manual or clinician advises, and switch the unit off before moving pads. Do not place pads over broken or infected skin, the front of the neck, or across the chest. Keep the unit away from water. Ask a clinician before use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, reduced sensation, pregnancy-related concerns, or uncertainty about electrode placement.

Stop using the unit if it causes burning, a rash, worsening pain, dizziness, or troublesome muscle contractions, and seek advice if symptoms do not settle. Get medical help for new weakness, spreading numbness, severe pain after an injury, or symptoms suggesting a serious illness. Electrical stimulation should not delay assessment of unexplained or rapidly changing pain.
