A clinician asks when the illness began, which medicines or infections came beforehand, and how quickly the skin changed. They inspect the rash, blisters, peeling, and mucosal surfaces such as the mouth and eyes. A small skin sample may help distinguish Stevens-Johnson syndrome from other blistering conditions. Blood tests can assess illness severity, but no single result confirms every case.

Do not delay emergency care while looking for a test online. Bring medicine packets, prescription details, allergy records, and recent changes if available. Avoid restarting a suspected medicine unless the treating team advises it. A photograph or home allergy test cannot safely rule out a serious reaction.

Seek emergency care immediately for a painful spreading rash, blisters, peeling, fever, facial swelling, mouth or genital sores, eye pain, breathing difficulty, or trouble drinking. Do not wait for a biopsy or laboratory result.
