Steroids for Eczema: What to Know

Atopic Dermatitis can weaken the skin barrier, causing inflammation, itching, dryness, and sometimes cracks or crusting. A topical steroid reduces that inflammation during a flare; it does not replace regular moisturising or remove every trigger. The appropriate choice depends on body site, age, skin thickness, flare severity, and whether infection is present. Darkening or lightening after inflammation may persist as Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, and it is different from active eczema.

Apply the prescribed amount to active eczema, then moisturise as advised, using clean hands and avoiding the eyes. Follow the stated schedule and stop date rather than applying extra during a difficult night. Be especially careful on the face, eyelids, groin, and skin folds, where unwanted thinning is more concerning. Keep using gentle cleansing and fragrance-free moisturiser between flares. Tell your clinician if you also have Dry Skin, Itchy Skin, Skin Cracking, Skin Crusting, or Itching Worse At Night.

Seek review if eczema is spreading, repeatedly returning as treatment ends, or not improving as expected. Prompt care is needed for increasing pain, warmth, pus, honey-coloured crusts, fever, blisters, or rapidly worsening redness. Get urgent help for facial swelling or breathing trouble. These changes may signal infection or a significant reaction rather than an ordinary flare.
