Steroid for strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is caused by a bacterial infection and can present with a sore throat, fever and swollen glands. A steroid works by calming inflammation, so it may be considered when swelling or pain is especially difficult, such as when swallowing is severely affected. It does not clear the bacteria or prevent every complication. Tonsillitis can have different causes, and symptoms alone may not distinguish them. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether testing or antibiotic treatment is appropriate.

Arrange a GP consultation if you have a severe sore throat, fever, tender neck glands, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms that are getting worse. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not use someone else’s medicine. Fluids, soft foods, rest and suitable pain relief can make swallowing easier; check medicine choices with a pharmacist if you have other conditions or take regular treatment. A steroid should be used only when a clinician has explained its purpose.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, have noisy or difficult breathing, develop rapidly increasing swelling, or cannot open your mouth normally. Emergency assessment is needed for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration or a muffled voice with one-sided throat swelling. These signs need prompt examination regardless of whether the cause is strep throat.

Ask whether your symptoms fit strep throat, whether a test is needed, and what the steroid is intended to improve. Clarify whether antibiotic treatment is required, how to take it, which side effects matter, and when a review is needed if swallowing or fever does not improve.
