What should you know about sternum muscle strain?

Short answer

A sternum muscle strain is an injury to chest-wall muscles near the breastbone that can cause local pain with movement, breathing, or touch.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

The sternum is the flat bone at the front of the chest. Muscles attached around the ribs and breastbone can be overloaded by lifting, pushing, a forceful cough, intense exercise, or a sudden twist. The discomfort is often felt in one spot and may worsen when you move your upper body, take a deep breath, cough, or press the tender area. Stiffness, guarding, or pain when using the arms can occur as well.

Pain that can be reproduced by touching or moving the chest wall may fit a muscle or rib-area problem, but that pattern does not rule out other causes of chest pain. A clinician may ask what triggered it, examine the chest and shoulders, and check your breathing and other symptoms.

What you can do

Reduce the activity that brought on the pain, while keeping gentle movement within a comfortable range. Short periods of cold wrapped in a cloth may help soon after an injury; gentle warmth may feel better later if the area is stiff. Support the chest when coughing, and avoid heavy lifting, forceful pushing, or stretches that sharply increase pain.

Use pain medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow the package directions or advice from a pharmacist. Do not return to demanding exercise until ordinary movements and deep breaths are comfortable. If symptoms are not settling, keep recurring, or limit sleep or daily activity, arrange an assessment with a doctor or physiotherapist.

When to seek care

Call emergency services for chest pressure, squeezing, or heaviness; pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw; severe shortness of breath; fainting; sudden sweating or nausea; or lips or skin turning blue or grey. Seek urgent medical assessment after a significant blow to the chest, or if you cough blood or cannot take a full breath.

Arrange prompt medical review for fever, a worsening cough, unexplained chest pain, marked swelling or bruising, or pain that is getting worse rather than easing. New chest pain should not be self-diagnosed as a strain, particularly if you have heart or lung disease or relevant risk factors.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which findings suggest a chest-wall strain in my case? Which activities should I pause, and how should I restart them? Do I need an examination or imaging? What symptoms should prompt urgent help, and when should I return if the pain does not improve?

Questions people ask

Can a sternum muscle strain hurt when I breathe?

Yes. Chest-wall muscle pain may increase with a deep breath, coughing, or movement of the ribs, but breathing difficulty or unexplained chest pain needs prompt assessment.

Should I exercise with pain near the sternum?

Pause the activity that triggers sharp or increasing pain. Gentle comfortable movement is reasonable, but return to heavier exercise gradually only when normal movement and breathing feel comfortable.

How can I tell whether chest pain is a strain?

A clinician can assess the trigger, tenderness, movement pattern, breathing, and associated symptoms. Pain with touch alone cannot safely identify the cause.
