What should you know about step wedge radiograph?

A step wedge is a calibration object with graduated thicknesses placed in or near the X-ray field. The visible steps create a reference for how the imaging system records differences in attenuation. Radiology staff can use that reference when checking contrast, exposure, and consistency between images.

This quality check is different from interpreting your bones. The radiologist still considers the patient image, the body part, positioning, symptoms, and comparison studies when looking for a fracture, alignment problem, arthritis, or another finding.

Ask the imaging service or referring clinician what the report says about the body area examined, not only whether a step wedge was used. Bring information about the injury, pain location, movement limits, and earlier scans. If the image quality is limited, repeat imaging or another test may be considered based on the clinical question.

Computer tools can assist image review in some settings, but a trained clinician remains responsible for relating an image finding to your symptoms and examination.

Seek prompt care after an injury if pain is severe, the limb looks deformed, numbness develops, skin becomes pale or blue, or you cannot use the limb normally. Worsening swelling or pain despite rest also warrants assessment, even if an earlier radiograph was described as reassuring.

Ask what the radiograph found, whether the image quality was adequate, and whether a repeat scan or different imaging test is needed. You can also ask how the findings fit your examination and what activity is safe while the diagnosis is being clarified.
