What should you know about stem cell mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy usually refers to placing small injections into the skin. A clinic may use the term stem cell for a preparation described as containing cells, cell-derived material, growth factors or another biological ingredient. These are not interchangeable, and a label alone does not show that living stem cells are present or that the treatment will work for your concern.

The proposed aim may be to support skin quality, texture, pigmentation, scarring or hair appearance. Results can depend on the diagnosis, the preparation, injection technique and aftercare. Ask for the exact product name, its ingredients, intended use and whether it is authorised for injection in the location where you are being treated.

Have a qualified medical professional assess the skin or hair problem first; an injection is not a substitute for diagnosing infection, inflammatory disease or a type of hair loss. Tell them about allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, immune problems, bleeding conditions, medicines that affect bleeding, and previous reactions to injections.

Before agreeing, request a written treatment plan covering the product, injection sites, expected changes, alternatives, aftercare and follow-up. Do not accept a vial with an unclear label, a product prepared outside your view, or pressure to pay for a package before you have had time to consider the risks. Mild tenderness, swelling or small bruises can occur after injections. Contact the treating clinician promptly if pain is increasing, redness is spreading, the area feels hot, pus appears, or you develop fever. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, fainting, severe weakness, or sudden changes in vision.

Do not wait for a routine review if the treated skin becomes unusually pale, dark, blistered or severely painful. Take photographs and note when the change began, what was injected and where it was given; those details can help another clinician assess a reaction or infection.
