Stem cells and exosomes: what should you know?

Stem cells are cells with the ability to develop into certain cell types under particular conditions. Exosomes are tiny membrane-bound vesicles released by cells that carry biological signals. A treatment marketed as stem-cell or exosome therapy may involve injection, microneedling, topical application, or use alongside another procedure; the label does not by itself explain what is actually delivered.

Ask whether the material is human- or laboratory-derived, how it was processed and stored, whether it is intended for the proposed use, and what is known about contamination, immune reactions, infection, and tissue effects. Claims about regeneration or rejuvenation should be treated cautiously when the product and route are not clearly described.

Before agreeing, request the exact product name, ingredients or cell source, batch and storage information, route of administration, practitioner credentials, sterile-procedure details, alternatives, and a written aftercare plan. Ask what outcome is realistic and what happens if it is not achieved. Do not proceed when a provider cannot explain the material, risks, consent process, or follow-up. Keep records of the product and procedure in case a later clinician needs them.

Contact the treating clinician promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, drainage, fever, a spreading rash, or a new firm lump. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, severe pain, vision changes, or rapidly worsening skin colour or tissue damage. Tell the assessing clinician exactly what was injected or applied and when, even if the product was described as natural.

Ask whether the proposed material is an exosome product or a cell-based product, what approval or oversight applies locally, and what evidence relates to this route and goal. Discuss alternatives, contraindications, expected recovery, possible delayed effects, and who will manage complications or follow-up.
