What should you know about stat6 immunohistochemistry?

Short answer

STAT6 immunohistochemistry looks for STAT6 protein in tissue and must be interpreted with other pathology findings.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a STAT6 stain is

A laboratory team applies an antibody directed at STAT6 to a prepared tissue section. If the target is detected, a marker creates a visible staining pattern. The pathologist considers where the stain appears in the cells, how extensive it is and whether the pattern fits the tissue appearance. STAT6 staining can support classification of some tumour types, but it is one part of a diagnostic assessment.

A stain can be difficult to interpret when tissue is limited, preservation is poor or the pattern is unusual. The report may therefore recommend additional stains, review by a specialist pathologist or molecular testing. A positive result does not by itself state how a tumour will behave or determine a treatment plan.

How to discuss the report

Ask why STAT6 was selected, whether the staining pattern is considered supportive or conclusive, and which alternatives were considered. Ask whether the sample is adequate and whether another test is needed before treatment decisions. Keep the complete pathology report rather than relying on a single word such as positive or negative.

When to contact the team

Contact the clinic if a pathology result has been issued but no follow-up appointment is available, or if the report says that further testing or review is recommended. Seek urgent help for severe symptoms after the biopsy or operation that supplied the tissue, including heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting or rapidly worsening pain. The stain itself is performed in the laboratory.

Questions to bring

What does the STAT6 pattern show in my sample, and how does it fit with the microscope appearance, imaging and other stains?

Questions people ask

Is STAT6 immunohistochemistry a blood test?

No. It is performed on tissue collected during a biopsy or operation.

Does STAT6 positivity automatically confirm a diagnosis?

No. The pattern must be assessed with tissue morphology and other relevant tests.
