Short answer

Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome is a medical emergency in which bacterial toxins can cause sudden fever, rash, low blood pressure and failure of several organs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Speed
Symptoms can worsen quickly and need emergency assessment.
Possible signs
Fever, rash, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, confusion and low blood pressure may occur.

What the condition involves

The illness can develop when Staphylococcus bacteria grow in a wound, the vagina or another site and release toxins into the bloodstream. It has been associated with infected wounds, surgery, burns and menstrual products, but it can affect anyone, including people without an obvious wound. Symptoms may progress quickly and can include high fever, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, confusion and a widespread red rash.

Later skin peeling, especially on the hands or feet, may occur during recovery, but waiting for this sign is unsafe. A rash may be absent or hard to see on darker skin, so the overall pattern and sudden deterioration matter.

What to do immediately

If toxic shock syndrome is suspected, call emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately. Tell the team about recent childbirth, surgery, wounds, skin infections or menstrual product use. Remove a tampon, menstrual cup or other inserted product if present, but do not delay emergency care while trying to find the cause. Do not drive yourself if faint, confused or severely unwell.

Hospital treatment may include intravenous fluids, antibiotics, removal or drainage of the infection source, and close monitoring of blood pressure and organ function. This condition cannot be safely managed at home.

When emergency care is needed

Seek emergency care for sudden fever with faintness, severe weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, a widespread rash, very low urine output or rapidly worsening illness. A person who collapses, has trouble breathing or cannot be woken needs an ambulance. Tell emergency staff if pregnancy, recent birth, a procedure or a wound may be relevant.

Questions after urgent treatment

Once you are stable, ask: Where did the infection start? Which medicines must I complete? How should the wound or affected area be cared for? Which symptoms mean I should return urgently? What steps reduce the chance of another severe infection?

Questions people ask

Can toxic shock syndrome happen without tampon use?

Yes. It can arise from infected wounds, surgery, burns or other sites, so sudden severe illness needs assessment regardless of the trigger.

Can I wait to see whether the rash improves?

No. A rash may be subtle or absent, and delaying care can be dangerous. Sudden severe symptoms require emergency help.
