Choosing medicine for spring allergies

Seasonal allergies can inflame the nose, throat and eye surface after exposure to airborne pollen. Antihistamines may help itching, sneezing and a runny nose. A nasal steroid spray may be useful for persistent nasal inflammation, while eye drops can target itchy or watery eyes. Some products can cause drowsiness, dry mouth or other effects, and decongestant sprays are not suitable for prolonged use.

Symptoms may fit Allergic Rhinitis or Allergic Conjunctivitis, but blocked nose, itchy eyes, itchy throat and runny nose can also have non-allergic causes. House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy can resemble seasonal symptoms, especially when they occur indoors.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician to match the product to your symptoms, age, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, blood pressure, glaucoma, prostate symptoms and current medicines. Follow the label, use nasal sprays with the correct direction away from the middle wall of the nose, and allow preventive treatments time to work as instructed. Reduce exposure by keeping windows closed when pollen is high, showering after outdoor activity and changing clothes before bed.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist despite correct use, disturb sleep, cause wheezing or repeatedly trigger sinus pain. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness or a rapidly spreading reaction. Severe eye pain or a sudden change in vision needs prompt eye assessment rather than self-treating as allergy.
