Sprained wrist or torn ligament

Short answer
A torn wrist ligament is a more substantial sprain and needs assessment when pain or instability persists.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key distinction
- A tear describes greater disruption of ligament fibres
- Useful clue
- Instability or painful clicking deserves assessment
Sprain versus ligament tear
A sprain affects a ligament, the tough band that guides wrist bones. The injury may stretch fibres or disrupt them more extensively. Pain, bruising, swelling, and weakness can occur with either pattern, so symptoms alone cannot confirm a tear. A feeling that the wrist shifts, clicks painfully, or cannot bear light pressure makes examination useful. A fracture can also accompany an injury and may need different care.
Protect the wrist
Avoid forceful gripping, pushing, and twisting until the wrist is assessed. Keep the hand elevated when comfortable and use cold through cloth if it reduces discomfort. A properly fitted [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) approach can protect an irritated ligament, but loosen it if fingers become numb, cold, or discoloured. Once serious injury is excluded, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can restore controlled motion and strength.
Signs that need assessment
Arrange prompt care after a fall or blow when pain is severe, the wrist is misshapen, or the hand cannot be used normally. Seek urgent help for loss of sensation, marked weakness, or pale or blue fingers. A wrist that feels unstable, remains painful, or repeatedly gives way should be examined even without dramatic swelling. Read about [Wrist Pain](/symptoms/wrist-pain/) to describe the location and triggers.
What to ask
Ask which ligament may be involved, whether examination suggests a fracture, whether imaging is appropriate, and when movement can begin.

Questions people ask
Can I tell at home if a ligament is torn?
No. Pain and weakness overlap between sprains, tears, and fractures, so examination may be needed.
Can a torn ligament heal?
Some injuries improve with protection and rehabilitation; the plan depends on the ligament and severity.
