What should you know about sprain calf?

Short answer
A calf sprain involves stretched or torn supporting tissue and needs protection, gradual movement, and assessment when symptoms are severe or unusual.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Protect the leg and keep comfortable, gentle movement
What a calf sprain can feel like
A sudden stretch, awkward landing, or forceful push-off can irritate tissue around the calf. Pain may be localised, with tenderness, tightness, swelling, or bruising. Walking, climbing stairs, or rising onto your toes may hurt. A ligament sprain affects a ligament near a joint; pain in the fleshy calf can also come from a muscle or tendon strain, so the exact tissue cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone.
Practical care
For the first day, reduce activities that increase pain and support the leg comfortably. A wrapped cold pack may ease discomfort; keep a cloth between the pack and skin. Elevating the leg can help with swelling. Avoid forceful stretching, massage, running, and heat while the injury is freshly painful. As movement becomes easier, gentle ankle and knee motion can prevent stiffness. A clinician or physiotherapist can guide strengthening and return to activity; see Physiotherapy for rehabilitation options.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment if you cannot bear weight, heard a snap, have marked bruising or deformity, or the calf is increasingly swollen and painful. Seek urgent help for sudden calf swelling with warmth or redness, chest pain, or breathlessness, because these symptoms need a different medical assessment. Persistent pain, weakness, or difficulty walking also deserves review.
Questions to ask
Which tissue may be injured? Do I need imaging? When can I stretch, drive, work, or exercise? Would a support, Kinesiology Taping, or Splinting be appropriate for my symptoms?

Questions people ask
Can I walk with a calf sprain?
Walk only as far as you can without sharp pain or a worsening limp; use support and seek assessment if weight-bearing is difficult.
Should I stretch a painful calf?
Avoid forceful stretching while pain is acute. Gentle motion can be introduced as symptoms settle, preferably with rehabilitation guidance.
