Spotting and a pregnancy test: what to know

Light spotting may happen around the time a period is due, after sex, or during early pregnancy. A negative test can be too early to settle the question, especially when a period is not yet late; follow the product instructions and repeat testing as advised if pregnancy remains possible. Hormonal contraception, infection, cervical irritation, and changes in the uterine lining can also cause spotting. Chlamydia may cause bleeding with discharge, burning, or pelvic discomfort. Cervical Dysplasia, Cervical Cancer, polyps, and fibroids are other possible causes of abnormal bleeding.

Spotting alone cannot confirm or exclude pregnancy. The timing of sex, cycle pattern, test result, pain, and bleeding amount all matter.

Use a home pregnancy test exactly as directed and record when you tested relative to your expected period. If the result is positive, contact a healthcare professional for pregnancy advice and mention the bleeding. If the result is negative but bleeding or a missed period continues, repeat the test according to its instructions or arrange a clinical test. Avoid self-medicating for pain without checking whether it is suitable if pregnancy is possible. Arrange review for recurring spotting, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, or pelvic pain.

Seek urgent care for possible pregnancy with one-sided or severe pelvic pain, shoulder pain, dizziness, fainting, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms can signal a complication that needs prompt assessment. Seek care as well for fever, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening pain. A positive or uncertain test with concerning symptoms should not wait for a routine appointment.
