Spotting at 10 Weeks: What It Can Mean and What to Do

Spotting means light bleeding or pink, red, or brown marks noticed on toilet paper or underwear. It is different from bleeding that fills a pad, but the amount and colour alone cannot show why it is happening.

During pregnancy, the cervix can bleed more easily, including after sex or an examination. Vaginal or cervical infection can also cause spotting; chlamydia may present with bleeding between periods or bleeding after sex, sometimes with discharge or discomfort when passing urine.

Spotting can also occur with changes in the pregnancy that need assessment, including a threatened miscarriage or, less commonly, an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy can cause one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or fainting and needs urgent medical attention.

Outside pregnancy, bleeding between periods has other possible causes, such as fibroids, polyps, or changes affecting the cervix or womb. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with unusual vaginal bleeding, but spotting by itself does not establish either diagnosis.

Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or early-pregnancy service and describe when the spotting began, its colour, whether it is continuing, and whether you have cramps or pain. Use a pad rather than a tampon so you can observe the amount, and avoid putting anything into the vagina until a clinician advises you.

Rest if you feel unwell, keep hydrated, and do not take medicines for pain or bleeding without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy. Your clinician may ask about your pregnancy history and blood group and may arrange an examination, ultrasound, or blood tests.

Seek emergency care now for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, fever, or feeling seriously unwell. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss, infection, miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy.

Even without those warning signs, arrange prompt pregnancy advice for any new spotting at 10 weeks, particularly if it returns, follows sex, or comes with cramps, discharge, or urinary symptoms. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you cannot reach your usual care team and the bleeding is worsening.

Ask what level of bleeding should prompt a return visit, whether you need an ultrasound or examination, and whether your blood group changes the care you need. Tell them about pain, recent sex or examination, discharge, urinary symptoms, previous pregnancies, and any medicines you take.

If bleeding persists outside pregnancy or recurs after the pregnancy assessment, ask whether you need evaluation for infection, fibroids, polyps, or cervical changes. Keep a simple record of the timing, colour, amount, pain, and associated symptoms.
