What should you know about sports massage trigger points?

Short answer
Sports massage trigger points are sensitive muscle areas treated with focused pressure, movement, and loading advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common finding
- A tender, firm area within a muscle
- Treatment focus
- Pressure is combined with movement and gradual loading
- Pause massage
- Fresh swelling, bruising, severe pain, or weakness
What a trigger point means
A therapist may find a firm, tender spot within a muscle that recreates part of your usual ache when touched. The area can feel tight during activity, yet the tenderness may also be felt nearby rather than exactly where the pressure is applied. Trigger-point work is one part of sports massage, alongside warming the tissue, gentle movement, stretching, and advice about training load. It should be adjusted to your response; strong pressure is not a measure of a useful session.
New soreness after treatment can occur, but worsening pain, marked swelling, bruising, or weakness deserves a different assessment. Massage is not a substitute for checking a fresh injury such as a muscle strain or contusion.
How to approach a session
Tell the practitioner when the pain began, which movements reproduce it, and whether you have numbness, swelling, or loss of strength. During treatment, describe sharp, electric, or spreading pain rather than trying to tolerate it. A sensible plan may use lighter pressure first, then reassess walking, range of motion, and the activity that matters to you. Hydrate normally, avoid testing the area with an unusually hard workout immediately afterward, and follow the agreed return-to-training steps.
For ordinary post-exercise soreness, gentle activity and gradual loading may be more suitable than aggressive pressure. A clinician can compare trigger-point treatment with myofascial release when the main problem is restricted movement or widespread tightness.
When to seek care
Arrange medical or physiotherapy assessment for sudden pain during a sprint, jump, or lift; a pop; visible bruising; increasing swelling; difficulty walking; or clear loss of strength. Seek urgent care for calf pain with one-sided swelling, warmth, skin colour change, or breathlessness. Do not massage a newly injured or significantly swollen area until a professional has checked it.
Questions to ask
Could this tenderness reflect a strain or another injury? What signs should make me stop training? Which exercises and pressure level fit my current symptoms? When can I safely return to full sport?

Questions people ask
Are trigger points the same as a muscle tear?
No. A trigger point describes a tender muscle area; a tear or strain is an injury that needs assessment based on its history and examination.
Should trigger-point massage hurt?
Pressure may feel intense, but sharp, electric, spreading, or escalating pain is a reason to tell the practitioner and change the technique.
