What should you know about spirometer vernier?

The vernier may be a sliding marker, pointer, or scale inside the device. Its movement depends on how air flows through the equipment and on the device’s design. A slow inhalation may move a volume indicator differently from a forceful exhalation, so the correct manoeuvre matters.

The marker is feedback, not a diagnosis. A low or changing position can reflect technique, posture, a blocked connection, or a genuine change in breathing. Compare readings only in the way your clinician has taught you.

Check that the device is assembled correctly and the marker can move freely. Sit upright, keep the mouthpiece sealed with your lips, and use the instructed breath. Do not tap, shake, or manually reset the indicator while measuring. Repeat only as directed and note symptoms alongside a reading when requested.

Clean and store the device according to its instructions. If the marker sticks, the scale is damaged, or the result changes unexpectedly, stop relying on that reading and ask the clinic or supplier to check the equipment.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or crushing chest pressure. Arrange prompt medical review for a sustained change from your usual breathing, repeated dizziness during testing, wheezing that worsens, fever, or chest pain.

Ask what the scale measures, which direction the marker should move, what counts as a valid attempt, and which changes require a call. Ask whether the device needs calibration or replacement if the vernier behaves irregularly.
