What should you know about spirometer for home use?

Home monitoring may help you and your care team notice changes in airflow over time, especially when readings are taken in a consistent way. The device only measures the manoeuvre you perform, so poor sealing, a weak blow, coughing or a blocked mouthpiece can alter the result. A single reading does not explain why breathing has changed. Symptoms, examination findings and formal spirometry may still be needed.

Use the same posture and follow the instructions supplied with your device or care plan. Note the date, symptoms, medicine use and unusual circumstances beside a reading. Keep the mouthpiece clean as directed, do not share it, and check for cracks, condensation or sensor warnings. Bring the device or its record to appointments if your clinician wants to review the technique and pattern.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or trouble speaking because of breathlessness. Contact your clinical team promptly if readings repeatedly fall from your usual pattern or symptoms are worsening. A normal-looking result does not overrule serious symptoms.

Ask how often to measure, what personal pattern matters, when to repeat a reading, and which symptoms require urgent action. Clarify cleaning, storage and whether your device is suitable for your treatment plan.
