Depending on the model, a ball or indicator may show whether the breath is slow and controlled, while a separate scale may show an approximate volume. These displays support an exercise routine; they do not by themselves confirm that the lungs are healthy or explain a symptom.

Use the model and mouthpiece supplied for you, sitting upright with your shoulders relaxed. Follow the breathing pattern taught by your care team rather than forcing air into the device. Keep the unit dry and clean it as the manufacturer or clinician directs. Do not share it. If you have an operation wound or pain, support the area as instructed when coughing, but never delay care for worsening breathing.

Call emergency services for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, or intense chest pressure. Seek prompt assessment for new chest pain, coughing blood, fever with worsening breathlessness, or a clear decline in your ability to take a breath. Stop the exercise if it causes severe pain or persistent dizziness.
