What should you know about spindle cell dermatofibroma?

Short answer
Spindle cell dermatofibroma is usually a benign fibrous skin growth, but a changing or uncertain lump needs examination.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
A dermatofibroma is a firm nodule formed from fibrous tissue in the skin. In the spindle cell variant, the cells have a narrow, elongated shape under the microscope. It may look like a small firm bump and can be darker than nearby skin. Appearance alone cannot reliably identify the subtype.
A skin lump is not automatically a dermatofibroma. Clinicians consider its size, colour, firmness, depth, symptoms, and changes over time. A biopsy can distinguish it from other benign growths and from lesions that require different treatment.
Practical next steps
Book a dermatology assessment if the lump is new, enlarging, painful, bleeding, repeatedly irritated, or difficult to identify. Do not cut, squeeze, or burn it at home. Photographing it beside a familiar object can help you describe change between visits.
If the diagnosis remains uncertain, the clinician may remove part or all of the lesion for laboratory examination. Surgical excision may also be discussed when the growth catches on clothing, causes persistent irritation, or remains diagnostically unclear. Removal leaves a wound that needs routine aftercare.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt review for rapid growth, spontaneous bleeding, ulceration, marked colour change, persistent pain, or a lump that feels fixed or deep. Seek urgent care if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure or if the area becomes hot, very swollen, and increasingly painful.
These features do not prove cancer, but they make direct examination more important. A clinician can decide whether monitoring, biopsy, or removal is the safest route.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the lump has the typical features of dermatofibroma, whether a biopsy is needed, what alternatives should be excluded, how a wound would be cared for, and what changes should trigger another review.

Questions people ask
Is spindle cell dermatofibroma cancer?
It is generally a benign dermatofibroma variant, but a diagnosis should be confirmed when the appearance or behaviour is unusual.
Does every dermatofibroma need removal?
No. A stable, confirmed lesion may be observed; removal can be considered for symptoms or diagnostic uncertainty.
