What should you know about spider bed bug bites?

Bed bugs feed while people sleep, so marks may appear on exposed skin such as the arms, legs, neck, or face. They can be grouped together, arranged in a short line, or noticed after waking. A mark alone cannot identify the insect. New bites may continue if bed bugs remain in bedding, furniture, or nearby cracks. Scratching can break the skin and allow a secondary infection.

Wash the area gently with soap and water, then use a cool compress for short periods. Keep nails short and avoid scratching. A clinician may suggest a short course of a topical corticosteroid for inflamed skin; see Topical Corticosteroids. Inspect seams of mattresses and furniture and arrange appropriate pest control rather than applying unknown chemicals to skin.

Arrange medical advice if redness, warmth, pain, swelling, or drainage is spreading, or if the skin is not settling. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Children, older adults, and people with reduced immune defenses may need earlier assessment when bites are extensive or repeatedly scratched.
