Sperm freezing and storage

A sample is collected, assessed and mixed with a protective solution before it is divided into labelled containers and frozen. Storage systems use monitored tanks and documented identification procedures. When a sample is needed, the laboratory thaws it and checks how it can be used. Some sperm cells may not survive freezing and thawing, so the laboratory explains the sample's expected suitability.

Vitrification is a rapid-freezing approach used in reproductive laboratories; ask the clinic which freezing method applies to sperm in its service.

Ask about collection instructions, infection screening, sample testing, consent, storage renewal and what happens if you change clinics or no longer want storage. Confirm how samples are labelled and how your contact details are updated. If collection may be difficult, discuss options with the laboratory before the appointment.

Contact the clinic promptly if you cannot provide a sample as planned, develop pain or swelling after a procedure, or receive unclear storage paperwork. Seek urgent care for severe testicular pain, sudden swelling, fever or difficulty passing urine. A fertility specialist can also help when a medical treatment may affect future sperm production.
