What should you know about a speech hearing test?

Results help describe the quietest level at which speech is heard and how clearly words are recognised. Comparing speech results with tone testing can show whether hearing difficulty affects one or both ears and whether background noise is a particular problem. Earwax buildup, inner-ear conditions and other factors may influence the overall assessment.

Tell the tester about recent ear pain, discharge, loud-noise exposure, hearing changes and any communication situations that are difficult. Bring hearing devices if you use them. After testing, ask for the result in plain language and discuss options such as hearing protection, follow-up assessment or communication strategies.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, new facial weakness, severe ear pain, or fluid or blood from the ear. These symptoms need more than a routine hearing check. Gradual difficulty following conversation, persistent ringing or one-sided change also warrants a clinical review.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a problem in the outer, middle or inner ear, whether both ears need monitoring, and when repeat testing is appropriate. If speech is hard to follow in groups, ask how the results relate to that specific difficulty.
