Sore throat without fever

A mild Common Cold may cause throat discomfort before other symptoms or without a raised temperature. Allergic Rhinitis can lead to post-nasal drainage and repeated throat clearing. Acid Reflux may produce burning, hoarseness, or irritation after meals or when lying down. COVID-19, Influenza, Strep Throat, and Tonsillitis can also present with varied symptoms, so fever is not required for consideration. The absence of fever does not prove that the cause is harmless, and a sore throat does not by itself identify any one condition.

Drink water regularly, use warm fluids, and select soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Avoid smoke, vaping, and dry or heavily scented air. If reflux seems possible, note links with meals or lying down and avoid eating immediately before sleep. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief, particularly if you are pregnant or take regular medicines. Keep track of new cough, congestion, rash, swollen glands, or worsening pain.

Arrange assessment if the sore throat is severe, lasts several days without improvement, repeatedly returns, or interferes with drinking. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling, severe one-sided pain, confusion, or dehydration. A clinician can examine the throat and consider testing even when fever is absent.
