Sore throat and a red face: what should you know?

Facial redness may happen when your body is warm during an illness, after exertion, or because the skin is reacting to heat or a trigger. A viral illness such as the Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 may bring throat discomfort with fever, tiredness, cough or congestion. Tonsillitis and Strep Throat can cause a painful throat and fever, while Allergic Rhinitis can irritate the throat through drainage. Acid Reflux may cause a burning throat without an infection. Glandular Fever is another possible cause when marked tiredness and swollen neck glands accompany the sore throat.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose cool or warm drinks according to what feels soothing. Soft foods can be easier to swallow. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Check your temperature if you feel hot, and notice whether the facial redness fades as you cool down. A pharmacist can help you choose an appropriate pain or fever medicine; follow the package directions and check before using it if you have a long-term condition, take other medicines, or are pregnant.

Seek urgent help if facial redness comes with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, faintness, or trouble breathing. Get prompt medical assessment for inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms are not settling, keep returning, or a high temperature persists. A clinician may examine your throat, glands and skin and decide whether testing is useful.
