Sore throat with red cheeks

Warm skin and fever can make cheeks look flushed. A viral illness such as a Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 may cause throat symptoms with facial redness, while Allergic Rhinitis can irritate the upper airway. Strep Throat may occur with fever, sore throat and a fine rash; Glandular Fever and Tonsillitis can cause swollen tonsils and neck glands.

Redness can also follow crying, heat, exertion or skin irritation and may not be part of the throat problem. Describe whether the cheeks feel hot, whether there is a raised rash, and whether the colour fades when pressed, while remembering that these observations do not replace an examination.

Take the temperature if possible, encourage fluids and allow rest. Use gentle skin care and avoid new creams if the face is irritated. Do not share cups or utensils while an infectious illness is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on symptom relief after considering age, pregnancy, allergies and existing medicines.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion, a rapidly spreading rash, purple or bruise-like spots, or inability to swallow saliva. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction or severe illness.

Seek prompt medical advice for fever with a new rash, severe throat pain, marked sleepiness, dehydration, neck swelling or symptoms that are worsening. A clinician may examine the throat and skin and decide whether testing for Strep Throat or another infection is appropriate.
