Sore throat that is not strep throat

Common viruses can inflame the throat, with cough, runny nose, tiredness, or body aches providing useful context. Common cold, influenza, COVID-19, glandular fever, and tonsillitis can all involve throat pain, though their accompanying symptoms differ. A negative strep test does not make every other cause identical.

Allergic rhinitis may cause throat irritation from nasal drainage. Acid reflux can cause burning, hoarseness, or an unpleasant taste, often after meals or when lying down. Dry air, smoke, voice strain, and dehydration may produce soreness without an infection.

Follow the testing clinician's advice and do not use leftover antibiotics. Rest, drink regularly, choose soft foods, and try warm or cool fluids. Avoid smoke and reduce voice strain. If nasal symptoms are prominent, ask a pharmacist about options suited to your health and current medicines.

Write down the test result, the day symptoms began, and any new symptoms. This helps a clinician decide whether another examination or test is needed, especially if the pain is not improving.

Obtain urgent help if you have difficulty breathing, cannot swallow saliva, develop marked neck or mouth swelling, become confused, or cannot keep fluids down. Arrange prompt review for severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, or symptoms that keep worsening after a negative strep assessment.
